A rigid square lattice of diamond bullseyes, drawn after each axis has been pushed through one monotone hyperbolic stretch about the centre — so the middle of the sheet is magnified, the rim compresses without limit, and the pattern never folds. The picture reads as a sphere and is not one: the map is separable, x = β·tanh(κ·w) applied independently to each coordinate, which is what puts the fine concentric arcs into the corners rather than an empty margin. Nothing here is a lens; the swelling does not fade back to a flat grid at the edge, because there is no edge to fade to. Two kinds of site alternate in a checkerboard and they differ only in which end of the ladder is heavy: at a bullseye the outer rings carry the weight and merge into a solid diamond, at a saddle they are hairlines and the cell reads as pale hatch, and the seam between them is the X where four cells meet. The ladders tile the sheet exactly — a ring reaches half a cell and meets its neighbour on the cell edge, so nothing overlaps and nothing is left over. The one law that makes the sheet hold together is that a ring is stroked at a fraction of its OWN local gap and never at an absolute width: as the frame compresses the rings crowd, and their weights crowd with them, so the ink share stays flat from centre to corner while the marks themselves get four times finer. Write that weight in pixels instead and the rim goes solid black. The apparent bulge is not in the pattern and not in a lens — it is in the ruler, which is what entasis means.
