Discs on a lattice, fused the way powder fuses below its melting point — where two touch, the silhouette is not left to cross in an X but is pulled into a concave neck, a circular fillet tangent to both, so a short chain of tangent discs becomes one closed body whose whole outline is nothing but circle arcs and fillet arcs. The lattice is consumed by seeded self-avoiding chains that grow one to six beads long and are forbidden from ever coming back alongside themselves, so every body is a simple loop and the fusion is always local: soft concave necks inside a body, hard circular edges between bodies, which is the whole tension of the picture. Each body is filled by a single linear ramp along its own axis, but the ramp is a window slid along the palette's full light-to-dark range rather than the range itself, and both the window position and which end of the body gets the bright end are read from one slow value-noise field sampled at the body’s ends — so tone drifts across the canvas in broad regions, bright bands giving way to near-black ones, without any body having been told which region it belongs to. Bodies are laid down in scrambled order, each dropping a soft offset shadow onto everything already painted, so a late dark body can shade an early bright one and the field reads as a shallow pile rather than a flat pattern; behind all of it one wide off-centre bloom lifts the ground out of black in the gaps. Beads may swell from one to the next, and the lattice may be square, where chains bend through right angles, or triangular, where they run straight or zigzag through 120° — the fillet is the same construction either way. Every mark is a fill: no stroke, no texture, no blur, no text anywhere.
