A black sheet combed edge to edge with hairline tapered needles falling in dense columns, where the picture is drawn by where the marks stop rather than by the marks themselves. Every column is walked against one anisotropic interference field: ink is emitted wherever the field stands above a threshold, so a column becomes a train of needles broken by black gaps, and each run of ink terminates on the field's own level set. Because neighbouring columns share the field, their tips land on the same locus and the eye reads a crisp curved edge that was never drawn — sweeping chevrons, shallow arches and scalloped bands, with dark pockets where the runs went short and stopped being emitted. Marks are one constant hairline width, so value is carried by length and presence alone; the mark family is a knob — needle, blunt wedge, double-tapered spindle, flat bar, or a needle beaded at the head — and a slow fan leans the whole field a few degrees off vertical the way a comb drags. No outline, no gradient, no transparency, no tone anywhere.
