A head assembled from one thing: a fat tube of soft material, round in cross-section, of slowly swelling and tapering thickness, ending in a blunt cap — and every mark in the picture is that, at four sizes. The tubes lie along the level sets of a single stream function built from a handful of classical flow elements: doublets posed on a seeded armature, vortices, a strain and a uniform stream. Because that field is divergence-free its level sets can never cross, so neighbouring tubes run parallel for long distances, fan apart, spiral into the vortex centres and peel away along the saddles between them, and the mass reads as one combed material rather than a tangle. The silhouette is nowhere drawn: it is the dividing streamline that closes around the whole armature, which is why the brow, the nose and the chin bulge where the elements sit and the profile between them has no corner. Each tube is as thick as a fixed fraction of the gap it sits in, up to a ceiling, so the ribs keep an even weight where the flow crowds and the bare ground opens through in wide holes where it runs slow. Nothing is painted with a gradient. The picture is a relief solved per pixel: every tube contributes an analytic height above the sheet, the nearest one wins the pixel, the surface normal comes in closed form from the tube’s own cross-section and width profile, and one soft light from the upper left produces every value on the sheet — a broad highlight along the lit flank, a fall that steepens toward the silhouette, and a far flank that shifts into deep navy rather than merely darkening. Depth varies along a tube’s own length, so a run passes behind its neighbour at one end and in front of it at the other, which no paint order can do; and where one tube crosses over another the depth discontinuity itself darkens the crevice beneath. Colour is assigned per tube from a ramp read by depth — cream and blush nearest, slate and navy deepest — drifted by a slow wash across the sheet, and the whole thing, mass and bare ground alike, is dusted with one heavy clumped grain.
